ABOUT
MASH was formed in 1991 by EAM composer Magnus Alexanderson and visual artist Sachiko Hayashi. MASH's focus has always been to explore various aspects of (inter-)relation between audio and visual, which has resulted in experimentations within several media and formats: multi-media performance, single channel videos and audio-visual interactive performance.
MASH's first project was a multi-media/intermedia project called "FU (風)." Between 1991 and 1992 "FU (風)" engaged a Butoh dancer, a modern dancer and a violinist at different stages of development, travelled through Sweden and was shown at 7 different cities in Sweden including Folkens Museum in Stockholm and Uppsala Museum of Art.
MASH then moved on to single-channel videos. These works have been shown widely internationally including such venues as Not Still Art Festival in New York, European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, Germany, Transmediale in Berlin, Boston CyberArt in Mass. USA , and Radiator - New Media Art Festival in Nottingham, UK . One of MASH videos, "Stretched in Dark" (part of MASH video trilogy), was commissioned by the National Council of Concerts in Sweden, and the whole trilogy was chosen by the same institution for a national tour and was shown at 8 different cities in Sweden in 2000-2001.
Since 2008 MASH has been exploring interactive audio-visual performances. For more info, please go to "Projects".
The music of "FU (風)" and "Stretched in Dark" is now included on audio CD "Stretched in the Dark," a compilation of EAM works by Magnus Alexanderson, released by Elektron, 2006.
Who We Are

Sachiko Hayashi is a visual artist who primarily works in video and screen-based interactive media. Originally from Tokyo, Hayashi holds a BA in International & Cultural Studies from Tsuda College, Tokyo, a MA with Merit in Digital Media from Coventry School of Art & Design, Coventry University, UK, and completed additional postgraduate studies in Computer Arts at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm.
Her works have been shown internationally at many video and new media festivals and exhibitions, including such venues as Symphony Space, New York, Saitama Museum of Modern Art, Japan and the National Museum of Science and Technology, Stockholm. One of her video works "Boop-Oop-A-Doop" has been included on DVD "Personas and Personalities" by Aspect Magazine, Boston, 2006, and in "ETC: Experimental Television Center 1969-2009" by the Experimental Television Center in New York, 2010.
Beside her video works, she is known for her net art and her contribution to net art communities. Examples of this include foundation and international launch of DIAN network, editor of online journal Hz and founder/curator of Hz Net Gallery. Also known for her commitment in Second Life as curator of Virtual Art Residency Yoshikaze.
In recent years she has been focusing on gesture-controlled interactivity which has resulted in audio-visual performances.
Magnus Alexanderson is an EAM composer and experimental guitarist. He studied Electro-Acoustic Music Composition under the guidance of Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Rolf Enström and Tamas Unguary at Electronic Music Studio in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm between 1980 -1983 and in addition received private tutorials in instrumental composition with composers Lars Sandberg and Mikros Maros.
His electro-acoustic music compositions have been performed at various venues throughout Sweden. In 2001 he was commissioned by the University of Linköping, the City of Norrköping and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to compose for the opening event of EU Commissioner meeting in Sweden. He has been a guest lecturer on EAM at the University of Linköping between 1992 and 1996, and for the period of 2009-2019 he was a lecturer/educator of Sound Culture at the same university.
He is also an experimental guitarist with contribution in various improvisational groups. His collaborators include Geoff Leigh, Jair-Rohm Parker Wells, Tony Bianco, and Gary Smith. The first CD of Decision Dream (with Jair-Rohm Parker Wells and Tony Bianco) was released by Canadian label Red Toucan in 2005, receiving international critical acclaim.
